He was also a writer of short stories, a journalist, and a screenwriter. He lived from 1907 to 1990. Some of his work is considered to be of relatively high literary merit. His two most famous novels are probably The Time of Indifference (1929) and The Conformist (1947).

His name was Alberto Pincherle Moravia but the family generally used the name Pincherle. Moravia adopted the Moravia name to avoid confusion with another writer called Pincherle. Moravia’s father was a Jewish architect who married a Catholic woman twenty years younger than himself.
